An Adapted Gospel?

I've run across people lately who are involved in a particular movement and believe that the function of the church is to reinterpret the Gospel for this postmodern American culture.

Really??

Is there such a thing as new Truth? There can't be. Truth is truth. Revelation calls the Gospel the eternal Gospel. I'm not sure that "postmodern" people are any more special or lost than any other generation.

Man needs a Savior because man is born in sin. That Savior is Christ, who paid the penalty for our sins on the Cross. He died and rose again three days later and now sits at the right hand of God.

What about the Gospel needs to be adapted for postmoderns?

I'm curios as to how one can "reinterpret" something that isn't an interpretation? Do these people change the names, places, or events themselves or what? To change any of these details is to make the fulfillment of prophecy irrelevant and nullify the Word of God entirely, now all we have is a good story (which is what much of postmodern culture is after)... where would such a motivation come from except the devil? That sounds like his normal tactics for sure.

Thanks for being on top of things, Chad!

I think you might be referring to the Emergent/Emerging movement. If so, I would like to say that I don't think they want to "reinterpret" the good news of Jesus Christ as much as they want to examine the interpretation that they have heard. Most feel that there is more to the good news than just a free ticket to heaven which is what they feel the gospel has been reduced to. None of the cultures that we inhabit in a fallen world are really good - but I believe that God will use each culture to help mankind keep moving along the journey that he created us for. I think, as do many "Emerging" christians, that God used the "Modern" culture for good and that he will also use the postmodern culture for good. We all need to keep in mind that our interpretation of scripture is always affected by the culture we are living in - we can't help it - we have no other perspective to operate from.
